About Dr. Hyland

Dr. Karen Z. Hyland San Diego TherapistI am a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in the Hillcrest area of San Diego, California.  Since 2000, I have delivered clinical services in many settings, including emergency psychiatric residential settings, psychiatric inpatient hospitals, outpatient day treatment programs, outpatient community clinics, the Family Services Center with the Navy, and in outpatient psychotherapy offices.  In my private practice, I work with adolescents and adults, providing outpatient therapy services as well as psychological evaluations.

I strive to be collaborative and to use empathy, compassion and constructive feedback as the basis of my therapeutic approach.

My theoretical approach integrates contemporary psychodynamic theories with cognitive-behavioral, family systems and mindfulness.   I find a blending of these works well for individuals, couples and families. For those clients who have trauma symptoms, I use Colin Ross' Trauma Model, exposure therapy and am a certified provider of EMDR.
I was raised in Colorado and then received my B.A. from Pitzer College in Claremont, California in 1991.  I completed my M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from California School of Professional Psychology - San Diego in 1997 and 2000, respectively.

I completed my APA predoctoral internship at Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital, where I did rotations on the child/adolescent and adult units. After obtaining my Ph.D., I completed my post-doctoral hours at CalWorks/StepForward, working with women and their children in the Welfare-To-Work program. I began my private practice as a psychological assistant in 2000 and became licensed as a psychologist in 2002. I am an Approved Domestic Violence Program Supervisor and was the DV Program Coordinator at Professional Community Services from 2000 through 2005. During that time, I also facilitated treatment groups at the Navy as part of an NIMH-funded study on the treatment of domestic violence. For two years, from 2006-2008, I was the Clinical Supervisor for pre-doctoral psychology interns at Catholic Charities, a low-fee agency that provides outpatient therapy to clients with a wide-range of concerns. Each of these varied experiences have prepared me well for private practice.
